Addicted to shopping

Payday only means one thing. New clothes of course! Obviously on my latest splurge I was in a summery mood. I brought a couple of little tee’s ready for the summer sun.

The first being white cropped tea from Topshop’s ‘Tea and Cake’ range. Taking printed tops to a different angle the literature slant suits me plus I am still looking for that Romeo!!!

Also, having just brought festival tickets for later this summer and the thought of booking up a holiday very soon, I couldn’t resist another summer bargain. Only £16 from Topshop is quite hard to believe. The loose style and rough edge with an unfinished hem and loose arm sleeves the vest is perfect for the summer. Printed with glitter and a colourful design I think it will definitely be a festival favourite this year.

Pink hair…. Soft candy floss locks to bright candy colours

So fashion should be original and creative as I was stating in my previous blog. This was one of the reasons I chose to dye my hair. Some probably would think it was a moment of craziness when I bleached the underneath f my hair to allow for the pink colour to take better to it. But I assure you it was totally planned, I’m the type of girl to think things over perhaps sometimes a little too much.

I liked the trend; I wanted something different with my hair and wanted to make my own twist to the trend. Initially the first time I dyed it, it was a candyfloss pastel pink. So yes, completely different to the usual reds, blondes or brunettes people normally choose and for someone who has never dyed their hair before not even high-lights it was a huge step. But I did it my way! I just dyed the underneath section, so I could maximise the pink if I wanted or style t to hide it and  it wasn’t the obvious expected way of dying with a unique colour.

And the image above doesn’t even do the brightness justice.

The pink was so soft in a matter days the pink faded to leave me with hair tinged in ginger. After trying the hair dye again and much to my disgust getting the same results I chose Crazy Colour. Now this was bright- I was giving Barbie a race for her money! But I like it, it’s me doing something different in my own way I just hope it lasts longer but so far so good.

Above: The contrast of the two colours- the pink Crazy Colour Pinkissimo hair dye.
I love the colour and t be honest I expect looks, it is unusual which is why I did it. But grown adults staring should really know better and to get over it, I never said it was natural…

Uniqueness in Fashion

There’s a lot of people that strive to be original. I’ll admit I don’t like to be a sheep and whilst I won’t go out of my way to be crazy, wacky unique. I lie to be different from a crowd but ultimately wear what Iike. Yet there is a type that shouts ‘arts, fashion youth’. That look used to mark the uniqueness of a creative person.

But has it now gone to a point that it doesn’t even show creativity anymore?

To a certain extent yes I do believe people are always able to put their own stamp on fashion whether mainstream or more underground.

I definitely think some people believe the brothel creepers, denim cut-offs with the pockets hanging down, black tights and a printed tee makes them stand out. Whilst it was once a huge fashion statement I do think it’s much more mass-market now although some wear just simply because they like it.

For me originality means more thought. I think we all have personal style and the ability to be unique, but putting our own twist on things we just need to think a little creative.

For example, the hair dye trend of pink- think Katy Perry eccentric pink or runway soft candyfloss pink, But I liked it and wanted to do something different with my hair. Yet I did it my way. I kept my long blonde locks but dyed the underneath section; it’s not too in your face as that isn’t my style buts it’s a little way of achieving the trend differently. And that’s what fashion I think should be about, thinking it through as the designers do.

Semester Two at UCA Epsom

It’s absolutely crazy my year is nearly over at uni. I know everyone says its truly the best time of your life, that you will find yourself and that it flies by. But like most things like that you can’t appreciate it until its happening to you.

Now in my second semester of my first year, but its nearly finished, I only have another month and a half left. Clichés aside, I have learnt a lot about myself and even I can see that my confidence and independence has grown. I have met some amazing people, realised a lot throughout this year and learnt so much.

This semester may not be over but it’s already taken me out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot. I will admit it, even interviewing someone from my university that I didn’t know was hard enough but that’s the career I want. Now, I wouldn’t call myself a pro in programmes like InDesign and Photoshop but I’ve starting to get the hang on them. I can feel myself becoming more of a journalist and have loved my time at UCA Epsom so far!

The Business of Fashion

It seems despite there being a recession, job cuts, higher rate of living and unemployment, designer luxury goods are still in high demand. And quite ironically, budget brands selling cheaper goods such as Peacocks and Barratts Priceless have recently gone into administration, whilst luxury houses flourish in the current economy.

Burberry’s turnover in the last quarter was up by 22 per cent and Mulberry has recorded that their Christmas sales were up 35 per cent on the previous year. So what is it about our love for all things expensive? Well, I think it’s that those who have money are just splashing it!

Companies are also expecting big profits during the Olympics with it set to bring London a massive boost to the revenue. Tourists will be looking to snap up souvenir designer gear like the newest Mulberry bag or Links of London bracelet rather than a postcard of the London Eye or the tacky I heart London tee. Ironically spectators cannot escape the opportunity to shop, having to walk through Westfield’s Shopping centre to get to the Olympic stadium.

There’s also something about a truly British design that just screams ‘buy me’. We do love to stick to our own brands and pride ourselves with houses that contain our heritage- Alexander McQueen, Vivienne Westwood. And with the Olympics fast approaching this summer; fashion houses will be sure to reach the gold.

This blog was orignally written in January but for a recent university hand-in I had to change and adapt it into this (I have adjusted a few points to make it more relevant to today- the Olympics).

Recycling Kate Middleton style

You may have seen it; you may not. Britain’s national treasure Kate Middleton is constantly in the public eye and her recent outfit choice has caused a bit of a stir in the press.

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a Reiss dress to her first public speech at a children’s hospice in Suffolk. No surprises there, Kate loves a bit of high-street with her favourites being Zara and Reiss. The surprise however comes from the fact that her Mum wore it first, way back in 2010.

The future Queen is not immune to a spot of recycling; wearing outfits again to oppose the usual lifecycle if high-end fashion. But this form of recycling takes it to new heights.

Who wore it best? Kate Middleton last week at her first public speech at a Suffolk Children’s Hospice or Carole Middleton at the Ascots in 2010.

Many have criticised or found it shocking that she has chosen to wear her Mother Carole Middleton’s dress and styled it very similar to how she wore it the Ascots in 2010. The very fact I am blogging about it shows how much it has caused a storm but should it really? I can’t help but think a dress like that for both occasions worn by Mother and daughter were styled appropriately and really there was many other ways to do it. Also with a country in recession, if she wore a new dress people could hardly complain yet we all know people would find a way to criticise. I think it shows a lot about Kate Middleton. Despite having the Crown Jewels of Monarchy in her close future she stays grounded to her roots. And that connection between Mother and daughter is strong which I think is brilliant to see.

If I’m honest I love a lot of pieces in my own Mum’s wardrobe. I often wear her jackets she seems to have another wardrobe of coats and I have been know to completely wear my Mum’s clothes on a night-out.

So I think we should all applaud her for being proud enough to wear clothes again that her Mum was first snapped in and secondly the very fact that I have blogged about it shows maybe we should wake up fashion should be about the clothes and not so shocking that a Princess has worn her Mother’s dress.

Her Curious Nature

It was just three years ago that London-based Sabrina founded Her Curious Nature and in that time it has grown from small boutique to chain store availability.

The beautiful accessories; a wonderful array of collars, headbands, clips and hats have a 1920s-esque feel and air of English heritage.

Above image courtesy of hercuriousnature.com

And lucky for us we can get our hands on them from her website directly or there is a limited selection available from Asos online.

Her Curious Nature have even succeeded with highstreet favourite Topshop. Now they have two stands in Topshop’s UK flagship store: Oxford Circus and today; Friday 23rd March marks another celebratory moment for Her Curious Nature as it launches in Liverpool’s main Topshop.

I was lucky enough to secure some accessories for my photoshoot I needed to do for university work and they were superb. The detailing is so impressive and the products are of such high quality; especially considering the hand-made accessories were made to fit my pastel theme.

Crufts 2012... Fashion + Glamour + Dogs = ???

If you thought glamour, fashion and clothes was just for the humans of the world think again. That’s right diamonds maybe a girl’s best friend but from the looks from Crufts 2012 man’s best friend: dogs like them too.

The glitzy numbers for dogs namely being collars are even embellished with real Swarovski crystals at a price I’d be pretty happy with for a ring! The reduced show price is over hundreds of pounds and yet many flogged to the stool for the pooches.

What does that say? Dogs like a bit of sparkle too or that the owners for sure have too much time on their hands?

Also as you navigate your way around the maze that is Crufts (I have been going since a little girl and have now successfully managed to learn my way around but knowing my luck the whole floor plan will now be changed), there are a number of stools for clothing. If you could call it that! The horrendous clothes I would not use as a rag to wash my car with.  In a way it offends me I love fashion, am studying it and aim to be in the industry but I also love dogs, have worked with them my whole life and aim to breed Championships for the show and Obedience rings in the future yet because I am in the ‘dog world’ it doesn’t mean I can’t dress.

I have to say amongst the stools selling everything imaginable to do with dogs there are some real-leather handbag stools. At show prices there are some amazing deals to be found.

I suppose I like the NEC Exhibition Centre so much because my two favourite shows are held there: Crufts in March and The Clothes Show Live in December. Once again, showing how hobbies mix in unexpected ways to oppose the stereotypes.

Punk... Then and Now

Rebelling. Attitude. Originality. Anti-glamour.

After the perfect eras of the swinging sixties, hippie seventies, squeaky eighties and punk is on your doorstep. With permanent tattoos and that Doc Martin shape footprint engraved into fashion history punk made a lasting impact on fashion.

The look; a reaction against glamour and the falseness of fashion meant to symbolise a change in attitude and the public’s desire for realness. Not only a direct rejection of the ideology ‘sex sells’ and the optimism within fashion adverts and photography like the Wonderbra campaign of the early nineties featuring Eva Herzigova in lingerie with just the words ‘Hello Boys’.

When you say the words punk you think of mohicans, leather, tartan, safety pins and studs. Quite ironically punk came to a dramatic end when it became too mainstream. Punk stood for originality and wasn’t afraid to be different but the punk minority grew into more of the majority and fr punk to survive it had to die then.

Fashion is always a direct link to societal change and the mood of society. Punk fashion is a great example of that. What I think is so moving is that it remains one of the most iconic fashions.

I love the fact that our fashions today are influenced by punk. Even with my girly fashion I love that fact that my wardrobe contains punk elements to it and had great delight in 'punking' my little sister up for a school disco a few days ago. Anything from a denim jacket to checks to leather can be punk inspired. I love a few studs too and one of my favourite pieces has to be a vintage denim jacket in a washed denim colour and baggy style.

It’s not only me punk affects its all of us but my brother went through a big punk phrase. Looking at my brother now with his 2 year old son you would never believe that he had a 5 inch Mohican he used to spike up and tartan trousers (probably the most larriest trousers you could find with one leg a royal, bright blue and the other a canary yellow). He may have calmed down in his fashion since then although he still has his leather jacket as one of his prized possessions but I think he did punk to express himself. He wanted to reject the reality of what was going on around him, rebel and shock everyone.

I love the fact that even 20 years on punk fashion still remains the greatest influence to fashion and even in my feminine look will probably continue to do so. Look in your wardrobe I am in no doubt everyone will probably have something influenced by punk in there... I didn't believe it until I truly thought about it with my wardrobe doors open. So take a bow to such a quick fashion 'fad' that caused a storm at the time and still continues too...

Glitter goes for gold

With the Olympics just around the corner; the fashion focus is on shiny, like the prized medals. Fashion and culture have continuous links to each other; other than sportswear, what better way to connect the world sports event to fashion, than a little bit of glitter.  Sparkling, dazzling, glimmering glitter steals the limelight on catwalks and high-streets alike.

Stunning crowds glitter has impacted the runways of designers from Fyodor Golan creating a sure sparkling statement with green glitter covering a models entire torso and head to Libertine’s sequin embellishment in glittery effect at New York’s fashion Week for Autumn/Winter 2012.

The glitter effect updates the girly look with an air of stylish optimism perhaps Britain will do well in the London games on home territory just as British designers have not failed to please at London’s Fashion Weeks.

You cannot escape a little glitter in your wardrobe and it is so easy to do. Grab a glitter nail varnish; there are some gorgeous Barry M shades or jazz up your wardrobe with sequins. This trend is perfect as its super easy to customise too; add a few sequins if on a tight budget even to a pair of jeans or shorts (depending on your patience sewing them can be quite therapeutic too).

So reach new heights and dazzle the stars with your sparking wardrobe.

Minnies boutique, Brentwood

Brentwood’s most famous sisters Sam and Billie Faiers were the first of the ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ (TOWIE) cast to open off their own boutique- it seems now it has turned into somewhat of a fashion.

Minnie’s; a small boutique along the cobbled Brentwood streets is a family run business.

Walking down Brentwood high-street you are more than likely to see a few people clutching the brown paper bags with the Minnie’s logo on them; often having been signed by Billie or Sam.

But what is it really like?

The shop is only small and cosy, but that gives you the chance to talk to them and see all the stock in the shop. There is the personal touch about the shop with Billie, Sam or their Mum and Aunt offering friendly advice. The personal theme is continued through how the shop named after Sam’s childhood nickname due to her love for Minnie Mouse- hence why their range of jewellery is Minnie Mouse themed.

There are some lovely little bits to have in Minnie’s. Of course there are the glitzy, sequin, jewelled, Essex- style short, tight dresses but there are t-shirts and dressing gowns too. And mixing vintage with some cute little new items, Minnie’s keeps high-street stylish and personal.

What I really like is that the personal touch continues in their website with Sam and Billie actually modelling the majority of their clothing.

With consumerism overload in our society it is nice to see the rise of boutiques in Brentwood; lets just hope these aren’t short-lived and survive against the army of chain stores. So if you haven’t already check out Minnie’s boutique there are some lovely bits I have my eye on.

Style tips

If you have a skirt that has an elasticated waistband in black or something it can look very high-street and cheap. Brands like Asos and Boohoo frequently use these. If I'm honest they remind me of cheap, tacky pieces for young teenagers. Transform it very easily by simply rolling up the waist. An instant update that gives the skirt more appeal if you felt it needed it you could always add a belt that would clinch in your waist.

Another little customising tip for you is to add studs for a little punk, edge to your wardrobe. My style is quite girly but I do like things that are a little different and I don’t like to fit the crowd. The best way to make something a little different is to customise. With the summer in mind, add studs (you can buy these quite cheaply on the internet or at a local haberdashery) to a pair of denim shorts. Personally I would half rip the back pocket off the jeans in a diagonally direction and press. Underneath the pocket where the main jean is I would add the studs; looks good and adds a twist. Wear with a girly tee or lacey top to take girly to edgy.

Goodbye winter blues

Finally I can almost taste the summer. The days are get lighter, the weather milder and let's face it people's moods are transformed with a little sun. It is definitely my favourite season. And it now being March I have firmly put away my trusty, thick, winter coat back into the depths of my wardrobe. I begrudge wearing boots so at the moment I will admit I'm mainly wearing dresses and skirts so I can little pumps but with thick tights my feet won't be cold! It may be a cheat or me just clearly not wanting to face the cold, stark reality of what British weather is but it makes me happy knowing I am a little closer to the summer I so desperately want.

In my summer attempts and by trying to find more dresses and skirts to wear (so I could do my trick of tights and pumps) I found a few pieces I had forgotten about. I love finding little lost treasures. In my latest rummage I managed to find a pair of culottes navy with white polka-dots on them; very sixties! I love these in the summer because you can have your legs out with a good tan look like you are wearing a skirt with the flexibility and movement of shorts- brilliant!! Anyway mixed with plain back tights and this time a black tee they were perfect for my spring crossover from winter. Usually in the summer I would tuck a tight, white vest and wear white converse or plimsoles with them a cool light, sportswear style look.

Another recent dress I have found fits perfectly with the new spring summer trend of floral. It is another navy number with cream floral detail on it. It’s a really cute day dress that is just so easy to wear and thinking about the trends more it will go brilliantly with a lace waistcoat of mine combining both 2012 trends of floral and luscious lace.

Photography through the ages...

Like fashion, photography has changed over the years. The scene of what reflected and the angle of photo’s has evolved over time.

The phenomenon that was the 1947 Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’ although not that ‘new’ considering the work of Parisian couturiers during the war saw the age of photography meant to encapsulate a sense of freedom, breaking free and independence for women. The image below is posed on the street although kept clean, with minimal background the photography was designed to sell women a new, better lifestyle.

Above: Dior’s 1947 ‘New Look’ Collection. Image courtesy of designmusuem.org

Photography developed more, if you look back at the swinging sixties for example most of the fashion shoots are studio based. If you was to search on for images of Twiggy in the sixties the majority are in studios using different coloured backdrops with some location shoots. These location shoots were mainly streets not really giving information or character about the model. It was intended to represent women of the sixties having increased freedom although at the time there was still a gender power issue.

Above: Twiggy in one of the many studio-based photos during the sixties. Image courtesy of twiggylawson.co.uk

As the photography has developed the nineties was a significant era. I think after the punk movement gave fashion more of a reality outlook and the connection to personal feelings and attitudes become apparent change descended. The photography during the 1990s; which saw the rise of the now style icon Kate Moss become raw to the point that it was not known whether the designer, stylist, model or photography was in fact on drugs. Was that blur intended? The photographs revealed a reality, meant to show a glimpse into the models life giving more personality than a show ironically these photographs down to the placing of cigarette butts and the awkward pose of the model was all staged. The anti-glamour shots were also symbol that the world is imperfect but that imperfection can still be beautiful and who better to show that than Kate Moss.
Above: Kate Moss  shot by Corinne Day in the ‘heroin chic’ era of the 1990s. Image courtesy of corinneday.co.uk

However I feel that fashion photography has always reflected more than just the clothes in them. The era of ‘heroin chic’ just demonstrated it.

Pastel perfect

The pastel colour palette has been on every catwalk this is Spring/Summer; you could say it stormed the catwalk but something about the gentle colour tones just doesn’t sound right. The gorgeous colours of mint, rose, lemon and glacier blue will transform our wardrobes into a sweetshop of candy colours or if you prefer with the summer heat an ice-cream parlour of ice-cream sundae tones.

Pastels colours may fall back to the fifties but it has definitely been modernised. Whether it’s the coloured denim in the light tones or girly pieces expect nothing but sweetness.

With it seen on most of the catwalks for this Spring Summer from Louis Vuitton to Dior to Marc Jacobs is has trailed down to the high-street offering a sweet taste of summer. I think the trend of the pastels colour really fits into other trends for this summer: the white, minimalism one as being pastels it is light and the shapes are simplistic.

Above: Deliciously sweet at the Louis Vuitton show for Spring/ Summer 2012.

The pastels have that bitter sweet feel to them they are not over-girly as they are more subtle and washed-out. Take inspiration from Louis Vuitton and Prada if you feel bold with pastels and layer the differing shades in a pastel form of last’s season bold colour blocking or give it an modern, cool and harder edge with a striking darker contrast such as navy or black.

Above: Phillip Lim.

 Above: DKNY.

Asos have followed the pastel fascination with swinging dresses full of netting and including crop tops in rose shades contrasting the girliness of the colour with the type of top. Topshop, Zara and Next have all got on board with the trend to with many shops updatingt he classic essential for the summer of the denim short in a light pastel colour of lemon, mint and peach.

Above: An asymmetric, fine pleated skirt in rose by Zara £29.99.

Pastels are perfect for the summer; I adore the mint colour and cannot wait to update my summer style with a few pieces and I’m hoping to get a tan to bring the most out of the colours.

Festival fever... The summer festival guide

Now we are in March, I know where has the time gone? The summer seems also nearer and so I think that is it actually ok to start thinking summer plans. Well I have just brought festival tickets so why not? Buying festival tickets for a fashion student means another thing… festival wardrobe! If you didn’t need an excuse to buy more clothes here is it.

First of all wellies, mud is a given at festivals. Some classic Hunter wellies are perfect for the fashion conscious or a bright, printed pair go well with the other festival favourite a pair of shorts. May a Primark stop first a buy a cheap pair of plimsoles to wear aswell if you don’t fancy you wellies if you ruin them (which at most festivals you are highly likely to) just throw them away!

For the day think fashionable, but sensible it may be hot and you may be dancing a lot so you will still need to be comfortable. This little striped number below that nips in at the waist and flairs out is from New Look and a bargain at £22.99. If it rains chuck on a little light rain jack and if you get a chilly a chunky knit both are handy to have (prepare for all weathers).

Another classic outfit is shorts and a little top. I have worn playsuits in the past which are lovely until it comes to needing the toilet where they become a bit of a pain. However I love this pair of mint hotpants from Topshop. Pastels are the key trend of 2012’s summer and mixed with a loose white top with a black bandeau bra underneath it and a great summer tan to emphasis the light colours will look amazing. You could take sweet to the max if you wanted with the Miss Selfridge top (image below the shorts) that had the cartoon character Mickey Mouse on the front and a tie-up detail to the vest.

As I’ve already said at nights and late into the evenings it may be summer but the temperature really drops so take a chunky knitwear cardigan with you. One like this Topshop one is perfect as it is neutral colours it will go with all your festival outfits which means less for you to carry in.

Don’t forget lots of baby wipes, hand gel, dry shampoo, a distinctive tent (the amount of times you will get lost looking for your tent is unbelievable) and maybe a little UV paint; it’s always fun! Also a big bag for your stuff but remember what you pack you have to carry in and plus a tent and sleeping bag it may be a heavy trek to camp. Enjoy!!!

10th Feb... Don't judge a book by its cover

So I may be a proud Essex girl but I am proud that I don’t believe I particularly fit the associated stereotype. Don’t just judge a book by its cover. In fact on a recent night out where I was only the born and bred Essex lady I was told I didn’t even sound very Essex.

So on the 10th February my good friend from university came for a taste of Essex; originally from Warwick she came to see the famous taunt of TOWIE: the Sugarhut nightclub. Now, as I only thought I would be in Essex for two nights one of which I would spend as a night-in with Mum and the TV and the other at Olly Murs I didn’t bring many clothes or shoes back with me, As it turns out the shock snowfall meant I actually stayed in Essex for a whole week and two weekends. This however did give me the perfect excuse in my desperate time of need to treat myself to so much needed items: a pair of jeans, top, jumper’s tights and of course what a girl needs most a good pair of heels. Well I am short and couldn’t go to the Sugarhut in flat, little pumps now could I?

I loved the heels because they were a little different; with a suede black heel and platform but contrasting cream and grey patent areas. The cream stood out on the shoe and matched well with my cream Topshop , Chiffon blouse. I wore this with a leotard underneath as it’s so see-through and sometimes that little motto less is more is not always best and my Aztec print I have previously blogged about.

My friend Toni; who actually moved from London a number of years ago but has since lived in Essex wore a simple black dress of a fitted bodice style and full, pleated skirt. The current trend of tights is the mock suspenders and Toni wore her version with bows on them with a pair of killer leopard print shoes; giving a pop of print to her look.

Taking a girly sexiness to a new level Sophy mixed leather leggings from Topshop, grey chiffon, long-sleeved blouse and mega-high platform red courts. She looked amazing and also just shows you don’t just have to stick to dresses. In many ways that just highlights the change to society that women’s fashion has much more freedom.
